In July 2004, the
Reinforced Earth Company, Ireland, was
awarded the contract for a new marina
in County Leitrim. Situated in Leitrim
Village on the River Shannon, the marina is
a 600m2 Terratrel development.
Limestone rock excavated
from the basin of the marina was crushed on
site. The crushed rock was then used as the
granular backfill for the Reinforced Earth
structure.
The beds of the
Limestone lay in horizontally. In some
sections the limestone rock was left in
place and mass concrete plinths were used to
create level 500mm high steps to accommodate
the vertical steps between the Terratrel
baskets. The crushed limestone was excellent
as a free draining granular backfill.
The marina was
constructed in the dry and subsequently
flooded.
A recess in the wall was
created to allow for an access pontoon which
rises and falls 2m with the seasonal
variation of the water level.
